The Hospital’s Critical Role in Battling the Opioid Epidemic

Dr. Jay Bhatt serves as Senior Vice President (SVP) & Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the American Hospital Association and President of Health Research and Educational Trust

(HRET). As SVP & CMO and President, HRET, Dr. Bhatt and his team lead association activities related to advancing physician leadership, health equity, national strategic partnerships and government-funded projects, which include the nation’s largest Hospital Improvement Innovation Network (HIIN). Additionally, he serves on the AHA Center for Health Innovation’s executive team.

Most recently, he was the first Chief Health Officer at the Illinois Health & Hospital Association. In this role, he led large improvement projects, including the Hospital Engagement Network (HEN), launched a physician leadership academy and designed and advanced a state-wide high reliability initiative. Previously, he was Managing Deputy Commissioner and Chief Innovation Officer for the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH). There, he led the implementation of Healthy Chicago, the city’s public health agenda, and innovations in cross-sector partnerships, predictive analytics, epidemiology and informatics. Under his guidance, the department was recognized both nationally and internationally in their approach to using predictive analytics to improve food inspections, lead inspections, chronic disease and West-Nile Virus.

Dr. Bhatt has practiced as an internal medicine physician for Erie Family Health Center and Chicago Family Health Center in Chicago serving vulnerable populations and is a faculty member at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University.

Dr. Bhatt received osteopathic medicine degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, his master’s in Public Health from the University of Illinois at Chicago, his master’s in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and his bachelor’s in economics from the University of Chicago. He is a fellow of the American College of Phyisicians. In 2013, he was selected as a national finalist for the White House Fellows Program. In 2016, he joined the class of Crain’s Chicago 40 under 40 and he was selected to the prestigious Presidential Leadership Scholars Program. Most recently, he was selected as member of the 2019-2020 class of Aspen Health Innovator Fellows.
