Eric Lefkofsky is the co-founder and CEO of Tempus, a technology company that is transforming cancer care by allowing physicians to personalize treatment using big data and modern analytics.
Lefkofsky is a serial entrepreneur who has co-founded a number of companies, including Groupon (NASDAQ: GRPN), a global e-commerce marketplace where he continues to serve as Chairman; Uptake Technologies, a leading predictive analytics platform; Mediaocean, a leading provider of media procurement technology; Echo Global Logistics (NASDAQ: ECHO), a technology-enabled logistics firm; and InnerWorkings (NASDAQ: INWK), a global provider of print solutions. He is also a founding partner of the venture fund Lightbank.
Lefkofsky never thought he would work in healthcare, but when a loved one was diagnosed with cancer he confronted a healthcare system that lacked the technology infrastructure necessary to truly integrate clinical and genomic data, which is essential for precision medicine. In late 2015, Lefkofsky formed Tempus, with a goal of building the largest database of clinical and molecular data in the world, and an operating system to make that data accessible and useful to physicians and the patients they treat.
From its certified lab in Chicago, Tempus provides genomic sequencing services and analyzes molecular and therapeutic data for its clinical partners, including leading academic medical centers, NCI designated cancer centers, hospital networks and community oncologists. Using the Tempus platform, physicians at these and other institutions across the country are now empowered to make real time data-driven decisions, through software and analytic tools that get smarter which each patient.
An active member of the Chicago community, Lefkofsky is a trustee of Lurie Children’s Hospital, the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Science and Industry, and Steppenwolf Theater. Lefkofsky and his wife Liz, are co-chairs of the Lefkofsky Family Foundation.
