President and Chief Executive Officer, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
Madeline Bell is the president and CEO of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), one of the top-ranked children’s hospitals in the United States. In this role she oversees 13,500 employees in the Hospital’s $2.5-billion-a-year health system and research institute. Prior to being promoted to CEO in July 2015, Bell served as CHOP’s chief operating officer (COO) for eight years. During her tenure as COO, she led significant growth while maintaining the financial strength and clinical excellence of the organization.
Bell began her career as a nurse at CHOP and held a variety of nursing roles before leaving and moving into hospital administration in 1989. Returning to CHOP in 1995, she has led the development of the CHOP Care Network, including home care, physician practice acquisition and community hospital partnerships; the expansion of the Hospital’s 4-million-square-foot Main Campus; the implementation of an electronic health record; and the development of many internationally recognized clinical and consumer-centric programs.
Bell is a mission-driven and inspiring leader who is recognized nationally for innovations in operations management, public policy and consumer engagement. She is adept at driving change and instilling a culture of accountability. She has special interests in urban planning, international healthcare, federal and state public policy, and leadership development of underrepresented minorities.
Bell is a fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and the chair-elect of the Children’s Hospital Association. She also serves on the boards of Comcast, the Schuylkill River Development Corporation, Health Alliance, Solutions for Patient Safety, and the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, for which she serves as a member of the CEO Council for Growth.
In addition to her board positions, Bell serves as the chair of the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank Economic and Community Advisory Council and also serves on the Villanova University College of Nursing Board of Consultors. She is an adviser to numerous international hospitals and lectures worldwide on the topics of children’s healthcare and women in leadership.
Bell is a native of the Philadelphia area. She has a bachelor of science in Nursing and an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters from Villanova University, as well as a master of science in Organizational Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of “The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia,” which is part of Arcadia Publishing’s “Images of America” series, and of the blog “Heels of Success” (heelsofsuccess.com), which she created to provide mentorship to women who are looking to reach new heights in their careers.
