LOUIS A. SHAPIRO, FACHE, President and CEO of Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) since 2006, oversees all strategic and operational aspects of the Hospital. Under his leadership, HSS has experienced significant growth, expansion of facilities, and recognition as the world leader in orthopedics and rheumatology.
His focus on culture and performance has led to patients receiving an unsurpassed experience and excellent medical outcomes. Patient satisfaction scores have consistently been among the highest in the nation, and the Hospital has among the lowest infection and complication rates. Patients travel from almost every state and 90 countries for outstanding diagnostic and clinical expertise.
His hands-on leadership has resulted in high employee engagement, with HSS twice receiving the Gallup Great Workplace Award.
A member of the Regional Policy Board for the AHA and Chairman-Elect of the Greater New York Hospital Association, Mr. Shapiro has more than 30 years of healthcare experience including as EVP and COO at Geisinger Health System and a leader in McKinsey & Company’s healthcare practice.
