As president of St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Joan Magruder leads one of the premier pediatric hospitals in the United States, serving not just the children of St. Louis, but children around the world. Founded in 1879, Children’s Hospital provides a full range of pediatric services to the St. Louis metropolitan area and a primary service region covering six states. As the pediatric teaching hospital for Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis Children’s Hospital offers nationally recognized programs for physician training and research.

Magruder served from 2006 to 2013 as president of one of BJC’s largest community hospitals, Missouri Baptist Medical Center in west St. Louis County, which is consistently ranked among the top 5 percent of hospitals in the nation for clinical quality. She joined BJC HealthCare in 2000, as vice president of business development, physician services and alternate care sites, which included responsibility for the financial and operational performance of BJC Medical Group, BJC Behavioral Health, BJC Home Care Services and BJC Corporate Health Services.

Magruder joined BJC from The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. As administrator of the department of surgery, she had responsibility for strategic planning and financial and operational management of 30 operating rooms and the intensive care and inpatient units. She also directed outpatient services, the transplantation program and the physician group practice. Magruder began her career with The Devereux Foundation Center for Head Trauma, and later established and led a for-profit rehabilitation center in Pennsylvania for adults with traumatic brain injury.

In 2012, Magruder was named to the “120 Women Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know” by Becker’s Hospital Review and in 2011, Magruder was selected by Modern Healthcare as one of the “Top 25 Women in Healthcare.” Magruder serves on the Board of Directors of the Missouri Hospital Association Management Services Corporation, MHA’s for-profit subsidiary; is an advisory board member for the Center for World Health and Medicine; and serves on the national Children’s Hospital Association leadership committee on advocacy and policy. She is a past Missouri Hospital Association District Council President and has also served as a United Way health services coordinator. Magruder was recently named a 2015 Leader of Distinction by the YWCA.

Magruder holds an MBA with an emphasis in healthcare management from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York.

Magruder is married with three children. She is a native of Danbury, Connecticut.
