Jeffrey Gerdes MD, MBA, is a practicing academic neonatologist and a physician executive at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He first became interested in medical leadership while serving as Clinical Director of the Zuni Indian Health Service Hospital. Dr. Gerdes pursued his leadership focus with 20 years of service as Chief, Section on Newborn Pediatrics, Pennsylvania Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, during which time he developed the Philadelphia area’s first network of community hospital NICU’s. His current leadership responsibilities include direction of the CHOP Newborn Care Network, as well as serving as the lead physician partner for strategic growth through creation and maintenance of the CHOP Care Network regional hospital partnership programs. His role as Associate Chair, Department of Pediatrics, focuses on finance, strategic development, and the Executive Committee.
Dr. Gerdes is a graduate of Dartmouth Medical School, pediatric residency at Boston Children’s Hospital, and neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship at CHOP and the University of Pennsylvania. He also earned an MBA from the Drexel University Executive MBA program, as well as a certificate in Global Human Capital Leadership from the Wharton School at Penn. Dr. Gerdes is a seasoned clinician and teacher, as well as an accomplished academician with over 100 original research papers and book chapters. He is the recipient of the Seri Fellow’s Teaching Award at CHOP, and of the Alfred Stengel Health System Champion Award, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, among others.
