F. Sessions Cole, M.D., the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Children’s Health at Washington University School of Medicine and Chief Medical Officer at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, has a longstanding interest in discovery of rare, novel variants in gene loci associated with extreme phenotypes in newborn infants including lung failure and structural birth defects. He has used state of the art genomic sequencing strategies, in silico computational prediction of variant function, model system functional testing, and replication in unrelated infants with similar, extreme phenotypes to discover novel, pathogenic gene variants not previously recognized to cause human disease.
